Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has seen significant recovery in terms of passenger traffic at its airports over the past 1.5 years.
For the year ended March 2022, ACSA’s nine airports handled 21.0 million passengers, an improvement of 131.6% compared to total passenger traffic for the year ended March 2021. However, total traffic for the year March 2022 was still 49.5% lower than that for the year ended March 2020.
Nevertheless, all of ACSA’s airports experienced rapid recovery during the year ended March 2022, with passenger traffic for the busiest airports, Johannesburg and Capetown Airports, experiencing year-on-year growth rates of over 130% .
With South Africa opening up its international borders by October 2020, outbound travel also started on the path of recovery.
Over the year ended March 2022, international passenger traffic at ACSA’s three international airports serving Johannesburg, Capetown as well as Durban saw a spectacular recovery with a year-on-year growth of 310.9%.
In particular, international passenger traffic at Capetown Airport grew by 380.3% in the year ended March 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year.
