For the year 2021 as a whole, the airports operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) saw a total passenger throughput of 36.1 million, which was a 16.0% decline from that generated in the previous year, when the COVID-19 pandemic first broke out.
The decline in passenger throughput across MAHB’s airports was largely driven by the poor performance at MAHB’s airports in Malaysia, which saw a year-on-year decrease in traffic by 58.4% to 10.7 million in 2021.
On the other hand, in Turkey, passenger traffic at MAHB-operated Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport saw a year-on-year increase by 47.4% to 25.4 million, indicating a faster recovery in Turkey.
This overall decline in passenger traffic across MAHB’s airports resulted in a 10.4% decrease in revenues to MYR1.67bn in 2021.
Greater losses in revenues were offset by a 65.6% increase in revenues from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport to MYR910.1mn as the airport saw a significant recovery from impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Across MAHB’s airports in Malaysia, revenues saw a 42.1% decrease year-on-year to MYR762.9mn.
