Benetton’s Potential Sale of Aeroporti di Roma Stake Offers Up Prize European Airport Asset

By Kevin Rozario (London, United Kingdom)

Italy’s powerful Benetton family is said to be considering the option of reducing its stake in Aeroporti di Roma (AdR), the airport operator which runs Rome’s main gateway Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino (FCO) as well as the primarily low-cost Ciampino Airport (CIA). The move comes as part of a shake-up of Atlantia Group which is AdR’s parent.

The motorways-to-airports group Atlantia owns 99.4% of AdR, with the rest of the share capital divided between local public bodies and other third parties. Atlantia also owns 64% of Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur which operates Nice Airport, the third busiest in France.

The Benetton’s broad-based holding company Edizione has a 30.25% stake in Atlantia  which is Edizione’s main asset (source: Consob September 30, 2019).

Established in 1981, Edizione had consolidated revenue of €13.1 billion in 2018 and an investment portfolio at December 31, 2018 of €10.2 billion.
